Kurogane was not exactly au fait with the holiday he was attempting to prepare for. That was not to say he hadn't tried; quite the contrary. Many hours had been spent hiding in the library with hefty tomes detailing a myriad of ideas, customs and practices. The problem had been sorting out what was relevant and what wasn't... He suspected (quite rightly, as it happened) that he had slipped up somewhere along the way.

He wasn't quite sure why the decorations called for stockings, seven orange candles and a bunch of red grapes on the mantelpiece. He didn't get the point of the tree at all, nor why he had been instructed to hang flowers from its branches (surely if the tree required flowers, it could grow them itself?). He similarly didn't understand the requirement of string to hold up card, but he had done it and even hung pieces of card from them. On top of a cabinet was a family of wooden ducks, floating in a bowl of water. On another was a delicate set of crystal flowers, some coloured lightly, others completely clear, that seemed to be growing out of the snow. He didn't get any of that. He did, however, get in abundance (physically and mentally) the need for sparkles. Fai would be pleased.

There was tinsel on the tree. There was tinsel on the ducks. Tinsel hung down from the ceiling, wound around the arms and legs of chairs, was piled up in cones on the table... The room sparkled dangerously when the lights were switched on.

The lights were another twinkling matter entirely. With enough sparkle to put Santa's fireworks display to shame, Kurogane knew he had at least achieved the right glowing, glittering effect there. They were wound around the tree (for once, his research had found some coinciding ideas) and hung along the top of the walls. They were colourful. And they sparkled. A lot.

Then came the matter of presents. No research had been necessary for that, at least. The Nexus shops practically ordered him to go out and buy people things, and he had risen to the challenge. Said presents were reasonably well wrapped and arranged on the table.

He also had lunch arranged, but that was another matter entirely. He smiled to himself, picked up some stray strands of tinsel foil from the floor, and returned to his bedroom to get Fai.

Kurogane has been watching the window for a little while now. He acknowledges the arrival of, well, whatever he's been waiting for with a nod. He whips a tie from its former resting place on the back of a chair (it's best not to ask), heads straight for Fai and without warning, fastens it over his eyes.

"We're going," he says, lifting Fai into his arms and carrying him out of the building. From there he takes them inside a car and simply says 'Go'.

Kurogane is looking at the ceiling. He's been doing this for quite some time. Yet if you got him to look away, he would have no idea how many cracks there are, how big the dents are, or even remember that he'd been looking at a ceiling. (He could, however, tell you the colour: he remembers having to repaint it after That Unpleasant Episode.) He has been using the time far more fruitfully to fully appreciate the texture, the scent, the appearance, of Fai's hair.

He remembers child Fai. If they had had a child, would he or she have had Fai's glistening golden locks, or his own black spikes? Would she or he have had a combination of the two? Would long hair be forbidden, boy or girl? What would he or she be like? What, he realises, he's forgotten to really ask Fai before, is would they name their children?

"Fai," he says, releasing strands of Fai's hair from the prison of his fingers. "What names do you like? For kids?"

Kurogane clicks around the internet, growling under his breath at an almost constant rate. Were anyone to be listening in, they might believe there was a very angry doggy in the room.

It would be an almost correct belief.

"I'm not pregnant!" Kurogane barks, swivelling around in the chair and storming away from the computer. Morning sickness, food cravings, hiccups, fatigue, backaches, problems he didn't want to go into... They could and must add up to something else.

For a start, where the hell was he gonna push a baby out of? He seriously hopes it isn't the same place that had the necessary stuff put into... He realises he is being ridiculous and paces into the bathroom and opens the cupboard.

He picks out the disturbing pregnancy test. Disturbing because really, his relationship with Fai isn't one that should require such equipment, but it somehow appeared in his shopping one time and it got kept just in case they knew someone who might want such a thing. He opens it, reads the instructions and follows them.

The stick changes colour. He does up his pants, returns to their room and sits on the couch, ready to inform Fai he is about to be a daddy.

Dimly he registers the wrongness of that thought, but it's a little muffled because of the rest of him having completely shut down in shock.

Kurogane is quite smartly dressed. Not just well dressed (that comes naturally, but he would hate it if anyone pointed it out), but smart. Which means it is time to Take Fai Out Someplace Nice again. As always, he has it all planned as only a ninja can plan, i.e. by keeping it all very secretive, everything carefully thought out yet flexible in case changes have to be made.

Hey, he's lacking a real job at the moment. People should be glad he's not going on fighting sprees to compensate for what he's missing.

Serious and to the point, and sometimes bordering on the sadistic, it takes a special breed of uke to satisfy your needs. You tend to be anti-social with little patience for most people. You need someone to challenge you and push you to your limits, and then be able to take the punishment you dish out, which frequently involves rope and alchohol. This is what makes the Badass Uke the yin for your yang, as you're the only one able to put them in line and satisfy each other.

The hell is this thing on about?

Kurogane carries Fai all the way home, all the way inside and onto the bed. He thinks Fai should lay down. He kicks off his shoes and lays down with him. His Fai. He swallows, hard, and wraps his arms around Fai. This Fai is going to be fine. He knows it. He can't weaken himself by doubting it.

The other Fai, he isn't as sure about. That terrifies him, even if there's nothing he can do to help. That was what Fai could have been.

They successfully completed the big day and now they get to relax and use as little energy as possible.

...Okay, that's not going to happen. A lot of energy will be used, but they get to do it in a different setting. A completely different setting.

The island's rim has villas dotted around, each seperated by a considerable amount of land and forest. Kurogane and Fai have a villa to themselves, and their own stretch of beach. They have no need to worry about being spotted whilst sunbathing in their tropical paradise. The centre of the island hosts a small village that provides the necessities, as well as suitable entertainment and dining facilities.

Even Kurogane is at a loss to find faults with the place.

Kurogane is in the kitchen. So is Fai, but Fai has been allowed to simply sit and play with whatever he wants at the kitchen table. Kurogane, on the other hand, is going to be cooking. It's a pretty rare occurance that he can be bothered, but for Fai he's willing to do it. He begins by chopping up the vegetables, slicing them quickly and expertly. Well, he has been known to use sharp objects occasionally, hasn't he?

"We're having pork katsu, vegetable tempura and rice for dinner," he tells Fai, finishing with the carrots and moving onto the brocolli. "And sweet mochi soup for dessert."

Kurogane brings the quivering child into their kitchen, guessing that this is Fai's most pressing concern at the moment. He eschews the elaborate, knowing what Fai needs is food right now. He brings out a selection of cold meats, cheeses, bread, quiche and sausage rolls and places them in front of Fai. Water is brought with them, to satiate Fai's thirst as he makes some warming hot chocolate and heats up desserts.

As soon as they find themselves at Aziraphale's, Kurogane begins scouting out the house's weak spots and anything that could be hazardous or helpful if a fight does break out. His trained eyes take this all in rapidly and also refer to other issues.

"Whereabouts do you want to be in here?" he asks Aziraphale, hoping the angel's condition is improving rather than deteriorating as the seconds flicker by.

Kurogane drops a hefty pile of brochures and booklets onto the table and sits down on the sofa. He takes a notepad and pen from the table and sits stiffly on the sofa, frowning slightly at the materials he's brought.

"Fai, want to go over food or location for the wedding first?" He's got plenty of information on both at hand, neatly organised into two sections.

Kurogane awakes. The first thing he sees is Fai, asleep, in their bed with him. He smiles.

Then he catches sight of the wall behind, red and zebra printed. Just like the sofa beside it.

It all comes back to him.

He freezes, staring at in it in breathless horror, taking in all the implications of its presence. And then he's pulled the covers over his head, attempting to block out the horrors a little longer.

Kurogane carefully lays out their suits from Lecourt, that he just got Mokona to hand over, on the bed.

"Get changed. We're off to a pretty smart place." This is definitely an understatement. The restaurant, located inside a five star hotel, is the best in the Nexus, something reflected in the atmosphere there. Mentally, he runs over all the details that he needs to remember to ensure the night runs properly. The room has been booked. A suitcase, containing a change of clothes for them both, generally sanitary items and a few things Kurogane just thought they might want, has already been left inside. The reservation for a table has been made. The ring is in his suit pocket.

He finds himself a little nervous, even though he's certain of what Fai will say. It's executing it all perfectly he's worried about not managing. And since this is a pretty important - no, he can't undermine it like that. It's an extremely important night. Mistakes are intolerable.

Everything had been perfect. The fact that now he didn't need to worry, the fact that he could openly love Fai without the typical pain of one way feelings, that they could actually be properly united.

That last part suddenly didn't fit.

Fai was keeping something from him. Something that was seriously bothering him, and, just like before, Fai was pretending nothing was wrong.

After you told someone your deepest feelings and expected them to at least begin opening up, having this happen shortly after was really not good. Ergo, Kurogane was not a happy ninja. He scowled at Fai as he entered their room again, hoping that somehow, his displeasure and feeling of betrayal would signal to Fai that he wanted him to prove how deeply he felt and start sharing his worries.

Kurogane untangles himself from where he was half-dozing next to Fai and heads to the shelves. He's actually able to notice things, finally, and notes the matching toys for the children. They ought to get something for Mokona, really. And maybe something more manly for the kid. He wrenches himself away from the eerily paternal thoughts and looks up at the still pristine box containing their zen garden.

"Hey, Fai?" he says, gently pulling it down off the shelf to get a closer look at it. It's small but neat and appears to contain the necessities and a little more. He approves. "Want to make a start on this or do you want to lie down a bit longer?"

It's clearly piqued his interest. He's taken the thin plastic wrapping off the box and is peeking under the lid.

Kurogane unlocks the door, drops the bags off carefully close by it and heads straight for the alcohol. If there was ever a time in his life when he needed it, it was now. He pops open two bottles, passes one to Fai and sits down on the bed. The bottle flies to his mouth, gets tipped straight down his throat (bypassing his tongue) and doesn't emerge until a substatial amount of it has disappeared.

Kurogane is a teensy bit upset.

His head is brimming with thoughts, none of them positive due to the circumstances, and he wants them all silenced now.

Kurogane carried Fai all the way back to the place they were staying at, its name escaping him at the moment. His mind was otherwise occupied on the uncharacteristically unenergetic Fai and how badly he had been hurt. It was fortunate that Kurogane was strong and able to carry Fai single handedly. It left him with a hand space, which was extremely important, since kicking doors open was hardly going to endear him to the other occupants who he hadn't even yet met.

A problem only emerged once he reached their room. He couldn't open this because of the lock (currently more of a nuisance to Kurogane than to any thieves). He gently set Fai down on the floor, assuming he didn't need to explain the reason why.
